Today, as the world marks the 2025 International Workers’ Day, I stand both honoured and inspired to address the hardworking men and women of Alvana Microfinance Bank Limited—and indeed, the entire Nigerian workforce—for the first time as Managing Director.

Mr. Chiemezie F. Akpuchukwu MD/CEO

This year’s theme is both urgent and profound. It echoes the truth that for millions of workers, especially in developing economies like ours, the demand for safe and secure jobs is not just an industrial policy goal—it is a matter of survival. Across sectors, workers continue to face hazardous environments, economic uncertainty, and growing mental health burdens exacerbated by inflation, insecurity, and unemployment. The call to “Fight For Our Lives” is not metaphorical—it is a reflection of the real dangers many workers navigate daily, from physical risk to emotional strain.

As we reflect on this, let us also remember that every bank teller behind the counter, every cleaner who opens the bank before dawn, every MIS officer ensuring our systems run smoothly, every marketer striving to reach the underserved, and every administrative staff working behind the scenes—all contribute meaningfully to our shared success.

At Alvana Microfinance Bank Limited, we are not just building a financial institution—we are building a people-centered institution. Our mission is founded on the values of inclusion, responsibility, and impact. But none of these values can be actualised without prioritizing the safety, well-being, and empowerment of our workers. As I celebrate my first International Workers’ Day as your Managing Director, I commit to advancing policies and a work culture that honors these principles.

It is important to acknowledge the vital role played by Nigerian workers in sustaining our economy, even in the face of adversity. The resilience of our workforce is unparalleled. During the pandemic, economic recessions, policy shifts, and regulatory uncertainty, workers have continued to innovate, adapt, and serve. That same spirit of dedication is what continues to power institutions like ours—fueling grassroots economic empowerment, financial inclusion, and community development.

  • Promoting Occupational Health and Safety: We will continue to invest in safe, conducive, and inclusive workspaces. Our goal is to ensure that every employee feels secure—physically, mentally, and emotionally.
  • Supporting Staff Development and Capacity Building: Our team is our greatest asset. We will prioritize training, mentoring, and career development to ensure that every staff member can grow with the institution.
  • Encouraging Open Dialogue and Feedback: We are committed to creating a culture of transparency and mutual respect where employees are not only heard but valued. Constructive feedback and open communication will remain key pillars of our management approach.
  • Recognizing and Rewarding Excellence: We will strengthen our reward systems to ensure that excellence, innovation, and commitment are duly acknowledged.

Let us also remember that Workers’ Day is not only a celebration but also a call to action. It challenges us to build institutions that are not only profitable but also people-first. Institutions that do not exploit but empower. Institutions that see workers not merely as tools but as the very heartbeat of success.

As Managing Director, I am excited about the journey ahead—not because it will be easy, but because I believe in the strength of our people. I have seen your resilience, your brilliance, and your dedication. With this team, I am confident that Alvana Microfinance Bank is poised for greater heights.

So, on this May 1st, 2025, I salute every member of the Alvana Microfinance Bank family and every Nigerian worker contributing to the growth and future of our great nation. Your labour is not in vain. Your safety is not negotiable. And your voice will always matter.

Happy International Workers’ Day!

In solidarity,

Mr. Chiemezie F. Akpuchukwu
Managing Director,
Alvana Microfinance Bank Limited
